The rise of Chinese EVs and what it means for ADAS calibration

The rapid growth of Chinese electric vehicle brands in the UK market is one of the most significant shifts the automotive aftermarket has seen in years. BYD, MG, Leapmotor, Omoda, and a growing list of other manufacturers are registering tens of thousands of vehicles on UK roads — and virtually every one of them is equipped with a comprehensive ADAS suite.
For ADAS calibration specialists and independent workshops, this creates both opportunity and challenge. The opportunity is clear: more ADAS-equipped vehicles means more calibration work. The challenge is that the calibration requirements for Chinese EV platforms are often different from established European, Japanese, and Korean vehicles — and coverage in third-party diagnostic tools has lagged behind registration volumes.
MG has been in the UK market long enough that coverage is relatively mature, but BYD's Atto 3, Seal, and Dolphin models, along with newer entrants like Leapmotor, present real coverage gaps for workshops that haven't updated their equipment or sought specialist support.
Core Diagnostics is actively expanding its vehicle coverage for Chinese EV platforms. Our remote diagnostics and calibration support is already available for the most common models, and we are working through the remainder as the market grows. If you are encountering a Chinese EV model that your existing equipment cannot handle, contact our support team — we may already have a solution, or be close to having one.
The Chinese EV wave is not coming — it is already here. Workshops that prepare now will be better placed to capture the calibration work this represents as the parc continues to grow.
